Alaska is the wild frontier of the American continent. It’s a place where humans are guests in the habitat of nature. Wild is truly the feeling you’ll experience throughout Southeast Alaska. Away from the hustle and bustle of 9-5 work, rush hour traffic, kids sports practices and the chaos of life – Alaskan nature is a refuge.
Odds are you’re experiencing Alaska for the first time, and more likely still is you’ll be visiting from a cruise ship. Cruises are a great way to see a lot of Southeast Alaska that is inaccessible via other means of transport. Soak in the glaciers and straits of the islands from the boat but please, do yourself a favor – don’t let the cruise ship be the only way you experience Alaska.
If you take the time and effort to leave the ship in port and do something more than walk though the many quaint downtowns like Skagway, Ketchikan, Juneau or even Hoonah. They are fun to see but the real Alaskan experience comes when you leave the beaten path, even just a little bit. Get out on a hike or nature walk on a trail by one of your stops. Or better yet, book an excursion to get out into nature, away from the crowds.
Whether that excursion is to see bears, go salmon fishing in a river, or on a tour to see whales, I promise, you’ll experience a deep connection to the world around you in ways you likely haven’t before.
Pretty cool huh?
